Betreff: Drei Förderlinien: 19 Mio. Euro für die Zivilgesellschaft beim Prototype Fund!
Datum: Tue, 18 Aug 2026 09:25:05 +0200

(english version below)

English version

The Prototype Fund supports individual developers and small teams in bringing their ideas for free and open-source software to life, from concept to prototype. We are very pleased to announce that we are adding two new tracks to the fund, additionally to the existing Prototype Fund “Innovation”:
  • The funding track Resilience provides dedicated funding for projects that create or strengthen alternatives to centralized Big Tech solutions. The aim of this track is providing resources to enable people to regain control of their software.
  • With the track Up and Coming, funding is provided to developers who have not yet spent years (or decades) of their lives in the software field and who are either 25 years old or younger, pursue a degree or are enrolled in a computer science apprenticeship. Through the implementation of a larger software project, these up and coming developers will be guided and supported on their journey into the open-source world.
  • The existing funding line Innovation continues to fund innovative software projects with a focus on data security and software infrastructure.
In all three funding tracks, free and open-source software created by and for society is funded with grants from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space: with up to €79,167 for individual developers and up to €158,000 for teams, as well as coaching, networking, and support. To ensure that developers can focus on the software, the funding program is designed to be as low-threshold as possible and involves minimal administrative burden. Currently, four additional classes are planned through at least 2031: a total of up to 19 million euros in additional funding will be invested in free and open-source software.

All information about the new changes can also be found on the Prototype Fund’s blog:
https://www.prototypefund.de/en/blog/ptf-3-0

The application phase for all three funding tracks begins on October 1st; applications will be accepted through November 30th.

Please feel free to share this email - we look forward to receiving many exciting ideas!
