Or is it just, as some might say, old wine in new bottles? ACS are systems which are self-managed, self-healing, self-organised, that are ultra-reliable, robust, yet dynamically flexible. So far, the computing community may have focussed on one aspect or another of these requirements, but we believe that never before the ambitious target of developing an ICT system that exhibits all these features have been contemplated before. There are many grand challenges to be met and many open questions here that need to be explored. Put simply, it is about enterprises trying to handle and manage an ever increasing complex environment consisting of software, hardware and communication infrastructure. The system elements are sophisticated, expensive and scarce technology resources, and specialist, responsible humans. These systems can not be controlled centrally, but form complex self-organising computational environments, for which decentralized forms of control have to be invented. The research departments of the big IT companies have recently started initiatives (e.g. IBM's Autonomic Computing, Microsoft's .NET, Sun's N1 and HP's Adaptive Infrastructure) to focus on this kind of control. The workshop will be organized in a manner designed to foster interaction and exchange of ideas among the participants. To this end we aim to kick off with survey-cum-tutorial papers in the first session, and in-depth research, transfer of concepts from other fields and novel applications in the later sessions. We hope that the workshop will be able to bring researchers from academia and industry together, in this important area dubbed as the future of computing. So, what is Autonomic Computing you may ask? Put simply, it is about enabling enterprises to handle and manage an ever increasing complex environment consisting of software, hardware and communication infrastructure with fewer and fewer and ever more scarce and costly resources and especially specialist people. Or in other words - how to do more work with less resources. This means that there is a need to have systems that, according to IBM & others, are self-managed, self-healing, self-organised, that are ultra-reliable, robust, and so on. System Analysis * Theoretical and simulation frameworks for analyzing autonomic systems * Evaluation criteria e.g. for dynamic adaptation (performance, availability, power, etc) * Tools (simulators, analytical models, middleware, compilers, debuggers, system management facilities, etc.) * Performance analysis/modelling of autonomic computing systems * Software and hardware concepts for dynamic detection of performance and fault problems * Software engineering techniques and practices for autonomic systems: tools; frameworks; reflective programming B. System Design * Design of self-organising, self-healing systems (databases, networks, etc), etc * Self-healing systems: dynamic fault diagnosis and correction; workload characterization; self-recognition; machine learning and defence strategies; dynamic stability in large-scale networks; dynamic adaptation; architectures for self-healing systems. * Software engineering support for autonomic control and self-organisation * Balancing desirable properties, e.g. optimization versus robustness * Architecture designs for self-healing capabilities in the underlying hardware and system software C. System Control * Approaches for managing ACS (economic/market based, nature-inspired, etc) * Control models inspired by biology, e.g. Immunology models * Control models inspired by cognition science, e.g. Self & non-self recognition * Performance enhancement methodologies for autonomic computing systems * Agent based resource in ACS environments, Agent-based technologies: multi-agent communities; peer-to-peer infrastructures; recommender agents; service and resource management; network monitoring and characterization; data migration and management; service discovery and management; performance modelling and analysis; mobile agents * Concepts for load balancing and dynamic stability in large-scale networks D. Applications * Integrating Peer-to-Peer infrastructure with ACS * ACS and Multiagent systems * ACS in Communication Networks * ACS in Databases * ACS and Grid Computing, Grid systems management; ontologies for grid systems * ACS in Pervasive Computing * Application-level adaptation and exploitation of underlying system's autonomic capabilities * Commercial and mission critical applications that can benefit significantly from these technologies * Support for managing and establishing autonomic computing systems SUBMISSION DETAILS ================== Authors are invited to submit original research contributions or experience reports of previously unpublished work. Papers should be in English, no more than about 5000 words long and conform to the IEEE Computer Society Press guidelines http://computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm would be highly appreciated. Submitted papers will be carefully refereed and evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of presentation.
