We Have Been Harmonized: Life in China’s Surveillance State

The USF Center for Asia Pacific Studies welcomes Kai Strittmatter
to discuss his book "We Have Been Harmonized: Life in China’s
      Surveillance State".
China’s strongman Xi Jinping is the most powerful Chinese leader
in decades, and he rules over a China that is stronger than it has
been for centuries. China’s authoritarianism is updating itself
with the tools of the 21st century. China is staking more than any
other country on information technology, on big data and
artificial intelligence (AI) to create steering mechanisms that
will catapult its economy into the future and make its apparatus
crisis-proof. The country intends to use this technology to create
the most perfect surveillance state the world has ever seen. In
this talk, Strittmatter will take the audience inside this digital
reinvention of dictatorship—the motivations that lie behind it and
the mechanisms that power it. He will discuss the now-famous
social credit system, with the internalization of control as one
of its main goals and how predictive policing based on Big Data
and AI has turned the region of Xinjiang into a high tech
      laboratory for China.

      Beste Grüße
